Sonic The Hedgehog: A Brief Walk In History
Sonic the hedgehog represents more than just a mere game to millions and millions of computer and console gaming addicts around the world. The nonchalant hedgehog who runs faster than the speed of sound has totally revolutionised the entire gaming world since it's inception way back in 1991 and since then has been passed onto from one gaming generation to another as game to enjoy, treasure and in short make the hedgehog almost a family member.
Sonic the hedgehog was the product of intensive research and analysis by the then struggling Sega Company. Faced up with competition from Nintendo for its product, Sega took prototypes from several different digital artists from around the country to finally come up with a product to challenge the best that Nintendo can offer and finally came up with the immortal Sonic the hedgehog. Sonic designed to primarily rival Mario first appeared as a prototype created by Yuji Naka before it was cast into the form that we know today by a group of fifteen designers and programmers who gave it their all to finally produce a mascot that would replace the existing mascot Alex Kidd. Sonic the hedgehog has since sold over millions of copies throughout the world and has also appeared as special characters in different other games besides having a significant impact on common pop culture.
Sonic the Hedgehog makes his first appearance in the flagship game Sonic the Hedgehog that would soon turn into a major success story for Sega. The kids around took into the entirely new experience that Sonic presented with the innovative game play and speed of Sonic especially attracting many to the game. Sonic was then involved in many a adventure mostly to combat his major nemesis Dr. Ivan Robotonik. The success of the initial project soon encouraged Sega to make a sequel that would involve Sonic's girlfriend Amy in a trip through time to ensure a good future for humanity. The next sequel produced a year later would prove to be a major hit that would imprint Sonic games in the annals of gaming history forever. The popularity of Sonic the hedgehog soon saw the affectionate hedgehog come up in a series of other games such as Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Blast and Sonic Blast before the designers at Sega decided to launch another series of games with Sonic as the major character. Over the next five years three sequels of Sonic Adventure were released as more and more teenagers decided to play Sonic games on their consoles. The boom of the Sony Playstation series only served to boom the whole Sonic games series taking it into an entirely new level indeed. Till date, more than 45 million Sonic the hedgehog games have been sold around the world which makes it one of the most productive business investments done by Giant gaming company Sega.
Such was Sonic's popularity that the it was soon inducted into the Walk of Game along with other immortal characters such as Mario and Link. The Internet era also enabled the usage of emulators online and one can now even play the whole series of free Sonic games online from the comforts of a desktop or laptop. Despite being over sixteen years old, the ever-smart and versatile Sonic the hedgehog still remains a huge hit and icon for millions of console gaming fanatics who are rooted to Sonic games.
