Sonic The Hedgehog and My Youth

When I was younger, I used to spend hours playing Sonic the Hedgehog games. I started getting into video games around the age of eight, and Sonic games were the hottest name on the market at that particular time. The first one that I played, naturally, was the original Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis. It took me a few months, but I finally beat the game, even though my friends enjoyed a few jokes at my expense because they claimed that it took me much longer to master the game than it took them.

After this, I was completely hooked; the moment I heard that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was going to be released, I harassed my parents for months about getting the game. Surely enough, I finally got it for my birthday, and I ran into my room to play it as soon as I could. This game took me much longer to beat than the first, though. I always seemed to have trouble on the final level, and especially with Robo-Sonic. However, the moment came when I mastered this game, as well.

My friends and I sat around for hours, sometimes days, in order to play Sonic games. After the first and second games in the series were released, I remember spending lots of time with Sonic and Knuckles and even Sonic Spinball, although these games, I feel, were not as much fun as the first two. However, I did get the chance to play (and beat) Sonic CD, which was released for the short-lived Sega Mega-CD console. I really enjoyed this game, and was actually the only person in my circle of friends to ever own it. In high-school, this became the subject of some folklore for other kids who never even knew that a game in the series between Genesis and Sega Saturn existed.

While these Sonic the Hedgehog games were all very fun, I would say that the most fulfilling one that I have ever played was Sonic Adventure for Sega Dreamcast. Many other people I have discussed video games with have also testified that this game was their favorite one, as well. I would have to say that the graphics did play some part in the overall excellence of the game, but I feel that the story was much more comprehensive than previous Sonic games, and even quite enthralling. Of course, I did not really understand the whole back story with the jungle and lost civilization, but it was a pretty cool throw-in, no less. I think it added some depth to a game that may have grown a bit stale since the first one was released.
