Sonic Turns 20

For two decades the speedy blue hero has sprinted across our computer screens and collected countless Gold Rings. And to celebrate reaching the landmark, SEGA are releasing Sonic Generations, which will show just how far Sonic has come since his first outing on the SEGA Mega Drive in 1991. The king of spin has featured in over 65 Sonic games and sold more than 70 million copies of his games - not bad for a character who started out being called Mr Needlemouse.

He was originally created by Japanese programmers Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Oshima after they were given the challenge to create a mascot for SEGA to rival Nintendo's Mario. And none of us will forget the first time we played Sonic. Speeding him along Green Hill Zone 1 Act 1 was an experience like no other as the bright colours and palm trees pushed the 16-bit Mega Drive to its limits.

In his last outing, Sonic Colours, the blue speedball took the franchise to a different level on the Wii. And now, we're hoping that Sonic Generations will bring together all thats great about the icon whilst keeping a sense of the genius that shook the gaming world back in the nineties.
